Turns out it’s nice. Photodump ahead:

The beach at Coronado.

The hotel (DoubleTree) ended up cancelling my reservation without my knowledge. The only other place that wasn’t booked was this place called Ocean Park Inn on Pacific Beach. This view was about 30 steps out my door.

View from the back of the Convention Center. I was there for the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! User Conference (along with about 16,000 other people).

I went exploring for a bit and found a place called Mt. Soledad. There’s a giant veterans memorial up there with sweeping 360 degree views of the coast and canyons.

On Wednesday night, I drove about 3.5 hours to Joshua Tree National Park. I spent about 45 minutes there and drove all the way back after sunset. Most of my time was spent helping some dude change his tire.

I was following an old Suzuki Sx7 into the park when his left front exploded and flung debris everywhere. It tore the fender off, but everything underneath checked out OK and he was able to make it home.

The flight home, via Las Vegas. Windward and leeward demonstrated beautifully.

Ramblin Rover bait. Sadly not too many pictures of cars. Spotted a ton of gems including a 918, 2nd gen NSX, 356, and many others, but I was driving when I encountered most of those.

If I didn’t have four kids I would live in San Diego. What’s not to love great weather all year, best car culture almost anywhere, and beautiful beaches. Now that I think about I’m retiring in San Diego. ;)

I mean, if I could afford a house there I’d give it strong consideration.

I’ve always liked every time I get to go down to San Diego. I was just there over the July 4th weekend and it was wonderful. Its just so nice how much more pleasant the weather is there vs out in the desert. And its like that year round! Way too many tourists and homeless there but such is life.

I am looking to be living in the Los Angeles area soon so I will certainly be making many vacations down South to San Diego. Great food in the city and the zoo is awesome (though expensive). I still need to check out some more twisty roads and hiking to the West of there as well. Will make for a good trip in my Miata!

I very much wish I could’ve driven my Z3 out there.

But on the flip side, I beat the crap out of that rental Elantra, so I’m glad it could take the fall for me.

I’ve lived in the same area my whole life minus college, but I’m thinking more than ever that I want to be closer to a coast!

Fun fact: if you visit San Diego for a month or longer, you’re automatically enlisted in the US Navy.

I love San Diego. My old firm used to have our smaller retreats at the Hotel Del Coronado and I actually had the room at the top of the turret once. It was much better in theory than in practice given the long, narrow stairway that you had to try to climb up at 3 in the morning after drinking for many hours. But it is beautiful out there.

What part of LA? I try to make it down to SD a few times a year. It is likely my favorite large city in the US. I explored some of the twisty roads east of the city in Jan. and had a blast! I wish I could remember where exactly I drove. I basically pointed the car west and took whatever road looked fun. Turned on the GPS to find my way back when gas was getting low.

Just like if you visit Carlsbad for a month you turn into a lego person.

My girlfriend works in Burbank and we are currently looking at living in Woodland Hills. But I gotta figure out my job prospects out there first. I enjoy both San Diego and San Francisco a lot. They just have so much going on. I dont think I could really live in either but its nice to visit.

There are some great twisty roads in San Diego County, especially East county up the mountains, great places to ride bikes and cars.

I remember last year riding my motorcycle I came up to a group of Michigan plated lightly camoed Mercedes AMGs being tested around twisty mountains roads in San Diego, looks like they were doing some testing

Yup, the only vehicle I’ve done driving in out there was a rental Hyundai Accent. It was the fastest car in the world though so I still had fun screeching tires. Definitely could have fun in my Miata with 200TW tires on it!
